According to current studies on corruption in general, the phenomenon of corruption has existed since the beginning of human history. Whereas the study of corruption in Islam emphasises on how Islam views corruption in general, political corruption, and abuse of power. This piece of writing focuses mainly on anti-corruption teachings according to Islam, based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. Both of these primary sources of Islamic law state explicitly that the prohibition against corruption is from Allah and His Messenger. Furthermore, Islam classifies the crime of corruption as a major sin. Those involved are typically those in positions of power who abuse that power and betray the trust that has been given to them. In the view of Islam, a person in authority who avoids corrupt practises receives a great reward for doing so. This anti-corruption discussion according to Islam also centres around the viewpoints and actions of those in power (ulu al-amr), particularly authorities (government, sultan, ruler, and so on), as well as Islamic scholars, fuqaha, thinkers, and intellectuals. They are responsible for keeping community members from getting involved in corrupt practices. This textual analysis-based writing finds that Islamic teachings oppose corruption and encourage the community to abstain from it. Islam, in particular, invites its followers to be trustworthy and have high integrity. Muslims are prohibited from betraying trust and exploiting power, which includes offering, accepting, or abetting bribery. Those in authority should set a good example for the community and try their best not to be involved in any corruption practices.
