His knowledge, mental capacity, and how he behaves and interacts with the environment and humanity differentiates him from other creations of God. Morality, Ethics and Akhlāq, are three terminologies of different origins that relate to human conduct, character, behaviour, mental attitude, etc. In modern times, Muslim scholars use all three terms interchangeably when referring to the ideal human character mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah. No study on akhlāq is complete without the proper understanding of the status enjoyed by man in the hierarchy of God’s creations. In this book chapter, the authors explored the real nature of the three terminologies (Morality, Ethics and Akhlāq) that refer to man’s conduct and behaviour, and what differentiates them. Apart from that, the chapter also looked into the foundation on which the Islamic teaching of akhlāq is built. Interestingly, the authors also investigated how early Muslim scholars and philosophers understood the term akhlāq. Lastly, the chapter ends with some discussion on what are the parameters of akhlāq and ‘ilm al akhlāq.
