Studies have shown that spiritual well-being can have a profound effect on a patient’s mental state and psychological well-being. Patients who receive sufficient spiritual care are reportedly happier with the care and treatment they receive in hospitals and are likely to have fewer negative emotions. Although assessing spiritual needs and providing spiritual care to patients are essential components of a nurse's job, research indicates that nurses do not always execute these tasks with their patients, nor are they competent enough to provide this critical service. This literature review aims to analyze and summarize a comprehensive and thorough review of previous research, theories, and knowledge about spiritual care in relation to nurses’ competence. The online search for nursing and medical journals published between 2017 and 2023, as well as the library databases, were accessed through electronic databases. The critical appraisal for the studies was conducted using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. Forty studies were finally included in this review. The findings extracted from the literature review made visible the following five key themes: level of spiritual care competencies, definitions of spiritual care, education and training, time management and sociodemographic factors, Nurses as the primary caregiver need to develop a high degree of competency in giving spiritual care as this will help patients meet their spiritual needs thus improving spiritual health and quality of life. Gaining proficiency in this type of practice as the patient's primary caregiver will enable patients to better satisfy their spiritual requirements, enhancing their quality of life and spiritual health.
