Study the performance of porous pavement on urban thermal environment. Part 1: Field observation
An observation and modelling study of thermal behaviour of porous pavement of an urban area, as related to the physical nature of the site, is presented. The measurement and calculations are made in comparison with a natural surface grass. The measurement program was conducted during the month of Fe...

The measurement and calculations are made in comparison with a natural surface grass. The measurement program was conducted during the month of February 2008 at IIUM Gombak Campus. Results indicate that the methodology was generally successful. It is pointed out that the fact that porous pavement is cooler than the non-porous pavement may have significance to the problem of assessing the role on the urban thermal environment. The variability of surface heat flux depends strongly on the material heat absorption and rate of heat storage. Because of evaporation, the temperature of the porous pavement is lower than that of the non-porous pavement throughout the day. The temperature of non-porous pavement is extremely higher than air temperature even at night and stored heat is released to the atmosphere at night which causes the urban environmental effects known as urban heat island. A numerical method was developed to study the thermal characteristics of porous pavement under fine meteorological conditions, which will be discussed in our next effort. The model simulated the overall porous and non-porous surfaces with physically reasonable choices of parameters from observations. 2008-06 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/1101/1/STUDY_THE_PERFORMANCE_OF_POROUS_PAVEMENT_ON_URBAN_THERMAL_ENVIRONMENT.pdf Eusuf, Muhammad Abu and Jahn Kassim, Puteri Shireen and Ibrahim, Mansor (2008) Study the performance of porous pavement on urban thermal environment. An observation and modelling study of thermal behaviour of porous pavement of an urban area, as related to the physical nature of the site, is presented. The measurement and calculations are made in comparison with a natural surface grass.
