There is a deficit information on how parents influence children’s participation in decision-making in health care. The aim was to explore the role parents assume in the interaction process surrounding children’s participation in communication exchanges and decision-making in a paediatric oncology unit in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This study adopted a focused ethnography design within a constructivist research paradigm. Participant observations and semi structured interviews were conducted with 22 parents, 22 children, and 19 nurses at a paediatric oncology unit in Malaysia. All observation fieldnotes and interview recordings were transcribed verbatim. Focused ethnographic data analysis technique was performed to analyze the data. Results: Three themes emerged from the situations where parents played their roles in the communication and decision-making process involving their child: (i) facilitators of communication, (ii) communication brokers, and (iii) communication buffers. Conclusion: Parents controlled the process of decision-making concerning their children’s health care, while the children prefer and welcoming parents as their consultant in decision-making process with regards to their health care. 2023-02-03 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/104516/3/104516_Understanding%20parental%20role%20in%20children%E2%80%99s%20participation%20In%20decision-.pdf application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/104516/4/Slide_Presentation_LEE%20SIEW%20PIEN.pptx application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/104516/5/LIST%20OF%20PARTICIPANTS%20WITH%20ID%20NUMBER%2009022023_ORAL%20PRESENTERS%20.xlsx%20-%20WCS.pdf application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/104516/6/Letter%20of%20abstract%20acceptance%20in%20UiTM%20INC%20February%2002%20%26%2003%2C%202023.pdf application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/104516/7/CERTificate_Participation_UiTM%20INC%202023-352.pdf Lee, Siew Pien (2023) Understanding parental role in children’s participation in decision-making during hospitalization: an ethnographic study in Malaysia.
