Microwave Pyrolysis for Bio-oil Production from Wood

Renewable energy is of growing importance in satisfying environmental concerns over fossil fuel usage. Wood and other forms of biomass including energy crops and agricultural and forestry wastes are some of the main renewable energy resources available. Wood and other forms of biomass including energy crops and agricultural and forestry wastes are some of the main renewable energy resources available. Fast pyrolysis is one of the thermal conversion processes of biomass besides torrefaction, gasification and combustion in the production of biofuel. It is proved that the product of pyrolysis can be further improved by using microwave as a decomposition method. Microwave provides better and uniform temperature distribution during heating as what is explained in the literature review section. The type and characteristics of feedstock and pyrolysis parameters will affect the product distribution and the decomposition of biomass. Hence, the objective of this project is to study the characteristic of bio-oil produced by microwave at different particle size of the feedstock. Pyrolysis and the results will be compared within the different particle sizes of feedstock. Literature reviews on previous similar scope of studies and experimental work are reviewed to provide better understanding and to improve current ideas on this project. The methodology explains the project’s activities and tasks conducted in sequences, from samples preparation to product analysis. The key milestone and gantt chart which keeps track of the project work, shows the project is completed on time. The results which cover the ash content analysis, CHNS, calorific value, water content and others are elaborated in detail in the results and discussion section of this report. Trends are constructed to compare the characteristic of the bio-oil using different sizes of biomass.
