Summary: | Malay Peninsula is linked towards two continental terrane, Sibumasu (western belt of the peninsula) and Sukhothai arc (Central and Eastern belt of the peninsula). Due to collision, Malay Peninsula was formed and accretionary prism form Bentong-Raub suture zone. Metcalfe stated that based on data collected has deduced that the origin of sibumasu is part of the NW Australian gondwana border during Cambrian-early Permian. The age of Semanggol formation is deduced as late Early Permian to late Triassic as (chert sequence of Early Triassic was not completed). Depending on the radiolarians, the age is said as late Early Permian to Middle Triassic. Three units of facies available in Semanggol formation: Chert, conglomerate and Rhythmic facies. Semanggol formation consists of three separate sections; Northern, Central and Southern. Most research has been conducted in Northern and Central in Kedah. Southern part of Semanggol is the least studied. Last carried out by Burton (1970) towards this recent mapping project. The analysis and construction of a geological map and propose tectonic model will contribute to enhancing and update geological information of the location. |
