Summary: | This project focuses on the application of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission
System (FACTS) for improving power transmission capabilities of power system.
The purpose of the project is to study and define the basic power flow problem of a
network and improve the network capabilities using FACTS controller. The project
is divided into two stages. The first stage is the identification phase focusing on the
study of basic power flow problems using power flow analysis, identifications on the
types of FACTS controllers and familiarizing on MATLAB and Power System
Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) software. The FACTS controllers chosen are Static VAR
Compensator (SVC) and Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). The second stage
is the implementation phase focused on applying FACTS controller on different
power system network FACTS controller is incorporated to the power system
network to control the power flow and ensure stability of the system. The
methodology of the project consist of model a base case power system, run power
flow analysis of the power system network without and with FACTS controller and
obtain result, and compare the results to observe any improvements. The power
system network used to demonstrate the controllability of FACTS are 3 bus network,
5 bus network, and IEEE 14 bus network system operating with common loads and
generators- An analysis on the effect of SVC and UPFC on the power system is also
presented in this project to compare the power improved. |
