Description
Summary:From 18th century to early 20th century, Chinese from Fujian and Guangdong province of China came to Malaya to work as tin miners for economic benefit. They gradually set up associations to provide assistance for the later immigrants. These Chinese associations continued to inherit the folklore cultural activities which include traditional festivals and religious beliefs, provide spiritual sustenance for the immigrants, while preserving originality of the local cultural characteristics. The research subject of this thesis are the two major groups of early Cantonese and Hakkanese immigrants who came to Kuala Lumpur for tin mining, urban development and construction. This research focused on the first established Cantonese association i.e. The Selangor and Federal Territory Kwong Siew Association (Since 1888)and the earliest Hakkanese association i.e. The Selangor and Federal Territory Fui Chiu Association(Since 1864)in Kuala Lumpur. The study aimed to explore the inheritance and development of the folklore culture of these two ethnic groups i.e. the Cantonese and Hakkanese in a new land. V Other than the Cantonese and Hakkanese folklore culture, the gods enshrined in Kuan Ti Temple of The Selangor and Federal Territory Kwong Siew Association and the Sin Sze Si Ya Temple which was established by Yap Ah Loy also reflect the religious content of these two ethnic groups. Both of the two associations show their tributes to the God of Kuan Ti by having solemn ritual ceremony annually. Besides exploring the inheritance and development of the Cantonese and Hakkanese folklore culture from both cases, the study also explored the integration of both dialect group with other ethnic groups, and the significance of the inheritance of their folklore culture to the building of their ethnic identity. In order to explore the ideology and cultural phenomena of the worship of local deities in the Guangdong folklore culture. Literature review, field work study and feature interviews were engaged in this research. The study also provides a detailed discussion and interpretation on the basis of the folklore culture of the two selected cases, and how they extend their ancestors’ thoughts, beliefs, feelings and lifestyles through the cultural activities which help to strengthen their ethnic culture and identity. Meanwhile the practices and inheritance of theirs folklore beliefs can be observed in four characteristics, namely, continuation, abandonment, integration and reconstruction. As far as the Chinese folklore culture of Kuala Lumpur is concerned, it is clear that there is a similarity between the Cantonese and Hakkanese folklore culture, as well as these dialect groups and other Chinese ethnic groups, which signify the cultural integration of Chinese community in Malaysia, While sharing many similarities with others Chinese dialect group, the study also concludes that the VI Cantonese and Hakkanese still retain their particular ethnic and cultural identity though their own particular folklore practices and ceremonies as shown in both cases. In short, the traditional festivals, religious beliefs, cultural heritage and the development of the traditional associations are the important factors to consolidate and sustain the practicse of Chinese folklore culture in both Cantonese and Hakkanese community. Thus, it is obvious that the two associations have render a major contribution on the preservation and development of the cultural characteristic of their dialects communities respectively.
