Description
Summary:River is the most important source in life, human health and natural ecosystems. The importance of the river can be seen today in terms of both which are physical environment or human survival. Equilibrium of the river depends on the flow rate of water and influenced by several factors such as frequency of rainfall and land use activities which changes then effected to the river flow. The increasing numbers of intensified land use such as agriculture, sand mining, timber which disrupted the natural ecosystem of the river. Sedimentation is one of the problems that often occur in rivers, this problem will affected water quality and causes the river becomes shallow and the probability the flooding happen is high. This sediment analysis study was conducted at the Terengganu River, Terengganu on January 2016. 7 stations were selected. Terengganu River experienced deterioration in water quality, resulting from the sedimentation problems and unsustainable development management around the river basin. This study aims to estimate the distribution of bed sediments in Terengganu River. The sediment grain size is measured to see the physical changes that occur in the river conditions which the caused by the sand mining activities in Terengganu River. There are two important parameter were quantified for this study, the distribution of sediment grain size (ϕ) and the river discharge values (m³/s). The technique of analysis of primary data obtained which determine according with the procedure of Gerald & Kenneth and the phi (ϕ) value in this study using the scale Udden- Wentworth which included median, mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. The results show the value of statistics for the median, mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis showed that the size of the sediment is dominated by the size of very fine grained (phi+1.00 to +0.30) and the majority of the sediment’s texture are form as very platykurtic and platykurtic which showed the high level of sedimentation. In addition, it can be proven that high sediment production, especially in Station 1, Station 2, Station 3 and Station 6 which impact of the land use activities such as sand mining around Terengganu River.
