Summary:This research is done to identify the perceptions of the senior assistants and senior subject teachers in secondary schools towards the roles played by principal as instructional leader in enhancing academic performance of the students. Instructional leadership of the principal is deemed very important in determining academic excellence. This instructional leadership in away is related to the effort to improve the teaching and learning process in school. This process involves implementation of innovative education program which aim to accelerate academic achievements of the students. In this research, the writer make use of 162 senior assistants and senior subject teachers chosen fron sixteen secondary schools located in Province Wellesley, Penang using the approach of random sampling. A set of questionnaire consisting of fifty Likert-scale items is used to measure the feedback of the respondents to the ten hypothesis formulated in this research. Pearson Correlation and Multiple Regression Statistical approach are used to verify these hypothesis. The finding of this research showed that there is a significant relationship between instructional leadership of the principal with the academic performance of the students. From these finding the writer also make fews suggestions or proposals to improve the leadership qualities of the principal in his role as a instructional leader in the secondary school to uplift the standard of the school and to emerge the school as a smart school.
