| Summary: | The Semban Ring Ladies of Sarawak, known for wearing
brass coils around their arms and legs, embody a unique
cultural practice that once symbolised beauty, strength, and
identity. Today, as this tradition declines, the few remaining Ring Ladies serve as living custodians of a fragile heritage, highlighting the challenges of sustaining intangible culture amid modernisation. This book, produced by the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA), UNIMAS, draws on thirteen years of visual ethnographic research through photography, drawing, and documentation to interpret their lived experiences and cultural significance. By blending ethnographic insight with artistic representation, it records and rearticulates a vanishing tradition while situating the Semban Ring Ladies within wider conversations on art, heritage, and identity in contemporary Sarawak. |
