| Summary: | This study aims to examine the structure, types ol'politeness strategies and
language features of indirect complaints by I: SI, learners in a tertiary setting. A total
of 29 undergraduate students at I. Iniversity Malaysia Sarawak in Kota Samarahan.
Sarawak participated in this study. The data were collected by tape-recording using
prompts comprise of4 topics in index cards to elicit indirect complaints. The
researcher acted as the silent but interested listener in the study. Results shown that
although indirect complaints in this study are structured similarly. the difference is
that the structures consist ofthese stages: introduction. details (conlpulsorv).
evaluative statement, problem solution, conclusion and remark (optional). Most of the
participants produced a simple structure of indirect complaint without providing a
problem solution. When a problem solution is not provided. it gave opportunity for
listener to empathise with the problem and build rapport with the speaker. This
showed that participants used positive politeness strategies. The results nlay be
important for future researcher to see whether speech act of making indirect
complaint is influenced by cultural context |
