| Summary: | The Southeast Asian region has experienced many episodes of human migration. It may also have been witness to contact between early Homo sapiens with archaic humans like Denisovans. Archaeological data indicates the presence of humans in the region as far back as 40 thousand years ago. These early humans are thought to be the ancestors of Australian Aborigines and several Negrito groups. Migration driven by agriculture and associated with the Austronesian language also had a major impact on the human diversity in the region. This chapter will discuss those and other migration models from the standpoint of genetic data. |
