Description
Summary:Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphate enzyme system of gastric parietal cell. Proton pump inhibitors are effective short term treatments for gastric and duodenal ulcers. They are also used in combination with antibacterials for the eradication of H. pylori. Proton pump inhibitor can be used in the treatment of dyspepsia and GERD. H2-Antagonists heal gastric and duodenal ulcers by reducing gastric acid output as a result of h2-receptor blockade. They also used to relieve symptoms of GERD. High doses of Hi-Antagonists have been used in Zollinger- Ellison syndrome but proton pump inhibitors are more preferred. The aim of this project was to analyze the usage trend of PPI and H2-Antagonist in medical and surgical departments in Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) Kota Bharu, Kelantan. The prospective study was done by screening outpatient prescriptions from January to June 2008. This study showed that PPI were most widely prescribed in medical and surgical department. The most commonly prescribed in medical department was omeprazole and in surgical department was lansoprazole. However, Hi-Antagonist also being used and both departments were preferred ranitidine.
