| Summary: | Participation in productive welfare programmes provided opportunities to welfare recipients as a form of self-employment for individual empowerment and financial sustainability without depending on welfare aid. The challenges for the Ministry, however, lies in sustaining the awareness and interest level of recipients to ensure effective and continued participation in the productive welfare programmes for individual empowerment and self-sufficiency. Hence, this study aims at measuring the perceived attributes namely, relative advantage, comparability, complexity, observability and trialability as well as its effect on participation and the empowerment outcomes of the programme participants. This study was conducted using quantitative approaches and findings are supported by informal interview. A total of two hundred and sixty-six (266) participants were selected non-randomly from 11 districts in Selangor to assess their effect of participation in productive welfare using Roger’s Model of Diffusion of Innovation (DOI). The study employed SPSS for descriptive statistics and AMOS structural equation model (SEM) to analyse the relationships between variables. Analysis also looked into the contribution of the five dimensions of perceived attributes that influenced participation as well as the economic and psychological empowerment outcomes among the participants. The Pearson correlation analysis concluded that all five perceived attributes had a significant positive and high relationship with participation and empowerment outcomes. The regression analysis to determine the unique predictors concluded that only trialability is a significant predictor of psychological empowerment. However, the compatability, trialability and participation were unique predictors’ for economic empowerment. |
